Position Overview

The Ophthalmic Assistant Extern Coordinator is responsible for developing and maintaining externship sites, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, and supporting student success throughout their externship. This role includes marketing CHCP programs to the medical community, building strong externship partnerships, and monitoring student progress.

A key objective of this role is ensuring at least 40% of externship sites hire students from the program.


Responsibilities

  • Secure, develop, and maintain externship sites to meet student placement needs.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, TWC, and accreditation requirements.

  • Maintain accurate student and site documentation, including timesheets and evaluations.

  • Conduct weekly site visits to track student progress and site quality.

  • Serve as liaison between students, faculty, and externship partners.

  • Counsel students on attendance, performance, professionalism, and employability skills.

  • Conduct externship orientations and ensure HIPAA/OSHA compliance.

  • Support students with resume writing, interviewing, and career readiness.

  • Collaborate with the Placement Coordinator to support job placement after externship.

  • Market CHCP programs to the medical community to develop new externship sites.


Qualifications

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher (COT, COMT required for preference).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Ability to build strong professional relationships and manage multiple priorities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Ability to travel 20–50%.
